The annual Palm Springs Modernism Week 2011 proved to be the largest and most event-packed mid-century celebration yet.

With over 85 exclusive dealers, the Modernism Show is truly the highlight of Modernism Week.  The show was extended to 4 days instead of 3 which allowed buyers and visitors to enjoy an extra day to view the outstanding collections of exhibitors from all over the U.S.

Queen of Vintage Honored at Vintage Fashion Event in Long Beach

The Queen of Vintage, Kathleen Schaaf, was joined by fashion lovers aboard the Queen Mary on Saturday, Feb 12th as part of the Inspiration 2011: vintage, fashion, art and culture event.

Owner of Meow and vintage fashion connoisseur, Kathleen Schaaf, was featured as the Queen of Vintage after the release of  the book Vol. 2 Queen of Vintage.  The book was produced by Rin Tanaka as a part of his book series, "My Freedamn" and features photographs of  vintage clothing, accessories, and unique finds.

Schaaf feels honored to be dubbed the Queen of Vintage and said, "Rin would come to me to find items to shoot for his previous books and I always had something he was looking for."  The Queen has a broad and unique collection of vintage finds she has collected over the past 30 years.  She says she finds all of her items the "old-fashioned way" and buys directly from old closed department stores or factories.

Schaaf specializes in finding dead-stock items and continues to find these type of items that have never been worn or used and many times still have the original tags.  She says, "The vintage market has changed in the last decade and I see more of an eclectic trend."  Although the market is changing she tries to cater to most people's eclectic needs whether it be military, surf, or punk.

The event featured many dealers and artists from the U.S. and other countries all using vintage as their inspiration.  A very vintage couple from Colorado featured their quality items at this years show.  Love Spy Vintage is owned by Samantha Perala sells vintage clothing and superior quality dead-stock swimwear. Maxwell Shesto showed off his custom wallets that are sure to appeal to any vintage lover.

Vendors came from all over and Ryota Sakai flew in all the way from Japan to present his vintage clothing and motorcycle gear.  He also featured a new line of vintage-inspired men's shirts.

Jeff Decker creates bronze sculptures of motorcycles, cars, or anything mechanical. The sculpture pictured above is a recreation of Rollie Free's record breaking ride in 1948 where he rode a Vincent HRD  for 7 1/2 miles accelerating up to the speed of 162 mph and 165 mph with his clothes off.

Palm Springs Modernism Week 2011 Celebrates the Architectual and Design Culture of the Desert

The 11-day internationally acclaimed Palm Springs Modernism Festival features a variety of exciting events that will include the Modernism Show, film screenings, architecture tours, glamorous parties, art exhibitions, a car show, a vintage airline uniform exhibit, and much more.

 
Welcome to Palm Springs, CA !

The West-coast premeire of the  Braniff vintage airline uniform collection will be exhibited at the Riviera Hotel with the opening reception on Wednesday, February 22nd.  The exhibit features the work from 1960's fashion designers Terry Labus for Nardis, Halston, and Emillio Pucci.

There will be over 50 events for participants to enjoy and experience at this year's festival.  Several art exhibits will be held throughout the festival including the photography of Albert Frey.  The free exhibit will run Feb 17-27th at the Micheal H. Lord Gallery.

Dazzles in Palm Springs

Hot temperatures means hot summer deals in Palm Springs.  With the heat index rising prices are coming down in the desert.  Palm Springs is a wonderful place to visit for fun hotels, swim clubs, and restaurants and bars.  When season residents are gone antique, retro, and design businesses slash prices so shoppers can find great bargains.

At Home Palm Springs Summer Sale

I was in At Home in Cathedral city and discovered their sizzling summer sale: 20%-50% their entire inventory! I found a beautiful 1960s teak buffet originally prices at $899 now priced at $500!  But that's not all!  Two Eames sidechairs that I swear I saw in a magazine were cut down in half to $300.

If you're a modern mid-century lover and you're on a budget this is a great place to find those pieces you've been missing in your collection.

Right down the street from At Home I saw Victoria's Attic Antiques and Collectables was having a great summer sale also!

Their Storewide sale was 25% with some vendors slashing prices further to make way for new inventory. Vintage posters, antique chairs, and one of the cutest lion paintings I had ever seen were all incredibly priced.

Back in Palm Springs I cruised down Palm Canyon Drive where signs were displayed everywhere luring in potential clients with red hot deals. Dazzles had great deals on some fun items and Asylum was offering up to 50% off select items in their store. Sure it may get over 100 degrees out here but all the deals are totally worth it.

New ways to use Vintage Scarves

There are certain types of accessories that one cannot have enough of and I believe scarves fall into this category.  From the 1940's to the 1980's designers such as Chanel, Hermes, Gucci, Valentino, Pucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Vera produced gorgeous scarves with bold colors and a variety of designs.

I have a colorful vintage Vera scarf my mother gave me many years ago which I use frequently to accessorize my home.  I hang it on lamps or if I need more color in a room I drape it over an end table.  I searched around the web and found out what other people are doing with their vintage scarves.

Frame It  If you have a favorite colorful scarf or a rare vintage designer scarf folded up in a drawer, framing it is a great way to show off a unique scarf in your home!

Wrap It  Use your vintage scarves to wrap gifts.  Wrapping paper gets thrown away and why not wrap a gift with something that can be reused. It's like two gifts in one!

Spring is just around the corner and I can't wait to spend every free moment outdoors. This is the perfect time to spruce up your backyard or porch and make it your second living room.  Creating a fun and relaxing atmosphere with your outdoor space can be easy with just a few pieces of furniture and some funky pieces of art. It's time to get inspired with antique and vintage finds to create the outdoor space you have always wanted. Here are a few ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

Using a large-scale piece like the antique weathervane shown above adds character to a large outdor space.

Outdoor fireplaces not only keep you warm but create a cozy atmosphere for you and guests. I also like to hang up mirrors to give more depth to a small space. Use large framed mirrors for a more dramatic effect and if they are a little distressed, even better.
